Description | STATE FAIR PARK - Traffic jams at the entrances.
David Morrison, 12, of Lincoln, chows down in the watermelon contest at the Nebraska State Fair Saturday..
A hot dog shortage at the St. James Methodist Church food stand.
A 40-percent jump in breakfasts dished out by "The Pancake Man."
Those signs, plus big crowds at events and picture-perfect weather, had officials at the Nebraska State Fair pinning a purple ribbon on the fair's opening day Saturday.
"It's been tremendous," said State Fair Board President Roger Henrichs of Blue Springs, Neb. "It's one of the best opening-day crowds we've had in several years."
