Description | Praise is in order to the stalwart members of the Illinois Republican Party’s State Central Committee for refusing to concede defeat in the state's critical U.S. Senate race.
The decision to offer the slot to Dr. Alan Keyes certainly did not come without incident and protracted debate. However, in the end, the reasonable voices on the committee prevailed over those who choose the right course of action only as a last resort.
Chief among those who provided leadership in the effort to woo Keyes to Illinois was State Senator Dave Syverson (R-Rockford). Syverson is known to be a thoughtful, soft-spoken conservative with a tendency to go along to get along. But this time Syverson knew the stakes were too high to capitulate.
Syverson fought for Alan Keyes and may have saved the Illinois GOP from further fracturing and internecine warfare in the process. It is also worth noting that Dr. Bill Dam, a pro-choice Republican, seconded the nomination of Alan Keyes. |
