Illinois Republican leaders met Wednesday to choose a new U.S. Senate candidate from two black finalists who seem to be at nearly opposite ends of the party spectrum: One regularly contributed to Democratic candidates; the other is strongly conservative. Two-time presidential hopeful Alan Keyes and Andrea Grubb Barthwell, a former deputy drug czar in the Bush administration, interviewed with the committee appointing a replacement candidate for Jack Ryan, who dropped out in June.
Keyes, who flew from his home in Maryland to interview, said Wednesday he was there to consult with the leadership about the best way to make sure there was an exchange of ideas. Asked how he felt about making a Senate run from a state where he has never lived, he said: "As a matter of principle, I don't think it's a good idea." He said he would do it only if "it's in the best interest of the state and of the nation." |
