President Bush delivered an election-year appeal to Roman Catholic priests and the laity on Tuesday, reminding the faithful of his opposition to abortion and gay marriage as he pledged to do more to help the poor if he wins a second term. "You have a friend in this administration," Bush assured those assembled here at the 122nd annual convention of the Knights of Columbus, the church's largest fraternal order. "You have somebody who wants to work with you to change America for the better." Three months before the election, Bush began a three-day campaign swing not in a political battleground, but in the friendly confines of his home state before an audience of 2,500 Catholics that included cardinals and bishops. He recited what he said were achievements from his pledge to serve as a "compassionate conservative" as he aggressively courted a slice of the electorate that could be pivotal to his re-election. Not once did Bush mention the name of Democratic rival John Kerry, who is the first Catholic to win the presidential nomination since John F. Kennedy in 1960. Instead, Bush renewed his commitment to faith-based initiatives and suggested how the two parties differ on social issues, from defending "the sacred bond of marriage" to "promoting the culture of life." |
