Description | Republican Party officials are planning a meet-the-candidate tour for the U.S. Senate nominee they hope to name at a meeting Tuesday to replace former candidate Jack Ryan.
But even as the party's State Central Committee prepared to grill potential candidates, Cook County Commissioner Elizabeth Doody Gorman, whom key Republicans had considered a top prospect, decided to take herself out of consideration, party officials said.
Republican officials said Monday it is not a certainty that the 19-member panel will have enough time to screen candidates and reach a decision at the special meeting in Chicago Tuesday afternoon to decide who should face Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Peter Fitzgerald.
Once a candidate is chosen, party leaders said the nominee will meet with reporters before being introduced to voters during a whirlwind tour of the state.
"There will be a statewide tour," said Mary Alice Erickson, vice chairman of the committee. "It will be up to the candidate to finalize that." |
