Description | Former state Assemblywoman Carole Migden waited for a linen-wrapped wine glass to be stomped by the Jewish "groom" of the lesbian couple she was marrying at City Hall on Friday morning -- and then swept up the grand staircase to the mayor's office for her own wedding.
Hers was just the third performed by Mayor Gavin Newsom since he set off a frenzy of same-sex weddings last week by directing the county clerk to issue marriage licenses to gays and lesbians. Migden, 55, chair of the State Board of Equalization, and Cristina Arguedas, 50, a criminal defense attorney, have been partners for 20 years. As an assemblywoman, Migden crafted California's original domestic partnership laws.
"Last night we decided to marry today while we could, before the court ruled," Migden said after the ceremony, cradling a bouquet of tuber roses, traditional roses and lilies. |
