DescriptionAs for the Georgia Supreme Court race on the ballot, we encourage you to re-elect Justice Leah Sears.

Much has been said over the years about her ideological slant - including on these pages. But Sears has proven much of it wrong. She is in the mainstream politically - and legally, a recent bar poll found her eminently more qualified than her opponent.

Moreover, it would do Georgia proud to have the country's first African-American woman to serve as a state's supreme court chief justice, which she would become with the retirement next year of Chief Justice Norman S. Fletcher.

Still, most recommending of Justice Sears is her dedication to openness in government and to a free press. Threats to the flow of information are constant; we need justices who will always err on the side of openness. Sears is such a justice.
