Description | June 26 (Bloomberg) -- Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Manuel Durao Barroso has emerged as the leading candidate to become president of the European Commission, the Financial Times reported without saying where it got the information.
Barroso, 48, met yesterday with Portuguese President, Jorge Sampaio to discuss the appointment. Sampaio would decide whether to call for an early general election or appoint another prime minister if Barroso takes the job, the FT said.
Barroso, a member of the Social Democratic party, would be a compromise candidate because member states have so far failed to agree on a candidate to replace the current president Romano Prodi.
A supporter of the U.S.-led Iraq war last year, Barroso would have to gain the support of French president Jacques Chirac, who led diplomatic efforts against the war, the FT said.
