DescriptionThe Taoiseach has told a summit of European Union, Latin American and Caribbean leaders in Mexico that countries must co-operate more closely to eliminate the scourge of poverty.

Among the main items for discussion are reform of the United Nations, human rights, the International Criminal Court and the fight against terrorism, illegal drugs and corruption.

Later, Mr Ahern will hold a meeting with the Colombian President to discuss the case of the three Irishmen who are still in jail in Bogota.

It is expected that Mr Ahern will press the Colombian leader to allow Martin McCauley, James Monaghan and Niall Connolly to return home pending the outcome of their appeal in their case.

The three men, who were found not guilty of training FARC rebels but guilty of travelling on false passports, have refused to accept bail and stay in Bogota until the final outcome of their case is known.

They claim their lives would be in danger if they were to remain in the Colombian capital.
