DescriptionMandela Denounces Iraq Prisoner Abuse
The Honolulu Advertiser

Former President Nelson Mandela, lashed out Monday at the United States and Britain for the invasion of Iraq and abuse of Iraqi prisoners. "We watch as two of the leading democracies, two leading nations of the free world, get involved in a war that the United Nations did not sanction," Mandela said in a special session of Parliament. "We look on with horror as reports surface of terrible abuses against the dignity of human beings held captive by invading forces in their own country, said Mandela. "We see how the powerful countries - all of them democracies - manipulate multilateral bodies to the great disadvantage and suffering of the poorer developing nations," said Mandela. "There is enough reason for cynicism and despair."

The U.S. military next week will begin the first in a series of courts-martial that could produce new revelations whether the mistreatment of Iraqis was an aberration or stemmed from pressure from commanders. Prime Minister Tony Blair of Britain apologized Sunday for any abuse of prisoners by British troops, but insisted the allegation, if true, applied to a small number of soldiers.
