Description | Excerpts:
"This is a race in a heavily Democratic state that for a Republican candidate will need full-time devotion in order to win," Fitzgerald said at an afternoon news conference announcing his decision.
In a chaotic political morning, former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar and former state Attorney General Jim Ryan were already being talked about as potential contenders, though Edgar has been extremely reluctant to re-enter political life.
Fitzgerald’s departure creates a potential wild primary on the Republican side, with party leaders from the White House down interested in trying to retain a GOP seat in one of the most heavily Democratic states in the nation.
