Description | Today, in communities across America, millions united with reverence at noon for the 53rd annual National Day of Prayer to pray to their deity for our troops, our leaders and our nation.
Prayer and belief in a supreme deity has always played an important role in our nation's history. Leaders such as Washington, Jefferson, Franklin and Webster not only participated in corporate prayer but sounded the clarion call to intercession on behalf of this young nation.
As far back as 1774, there is record of government leaders calling for a day of intercession. The Continental Congress designated a time for prayer in 1775, while forming a new nation. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln called for a national day of prayer and Franklin Roosevelt followed the lead of America.
