An analysis of the number of candidates run by the Massachusetts GOP every two years. In 1990, Republicans contested 37 of 40 State Senate seats and won 16. Twelve years later, 16 candidates were fielded, and the GOP only won six.

In the lower house, 120 candidates were fielded by Republicans in 1990, and the GOP won 38 seats. In 2002, only 62 candidates were fielded, of which a mere 23 won.
