Description | MONTGOMERY - The state cigarette tax would jump by about 29 cents per pack on name-brand cigarettes and 60 cents per pack on generic cigarettes under a plan proposed Thursday by a veteran lawmaker and praised by Gov. Bob Riley.
Sen. Gerald Dial, D-Lineville, said the tax plan he proposed would raise an estimated $105 million each year.
Dial's plan would cost a pack-a-day smoker about an extra $106 per year for name-brand cigarettes and about an extra $219 per year for generic cigarettes.
Dial talked with Riley and several senators about his plan, which was one of a few new or revised money-raising ideas that lawmakers floated Thursday. But Sen. Lowell Barron, D-Fyffe, said the increase proposed in Dial's plan may be too much for lawmakers to accept. ``I think it's an uphill battle," said Barron, the top-ranking state senator. ``It will receive strong resistance from the tobacco companies.
