Description | Moderate Republican Sen. Arlen Specter, facing the toughest primary race of any incumbent senator, fought for his political life on Tuesday against a conservative challenge that could influence the battles for control of the Senate and White House.
Specter, a four-term senator from Pennsylvania and one of the last of the Senate's moderate Republicans, went into Tuesday's voting with a narrow lead in polls over conservative Rep. Pat Toomey in a race seen by both sides as an ideological struggle for the party's future.
An upset defeat of Specter would give Democrats an unexpected shot at picking up a Senate seat in the swing state of Pennsylvania, where Democrats narrowly outnumber Republicans. |
