Description | Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, who pushed to legalize marijuana during his eight years in office, continues to work in support of the issue, the Albuquerque Journal reported April 16.
Johnson has established a nonprofit organization called Americans Against the War on Drugs. He travels the country frequently to make speeches and lobby on the issue. Earlier this year, Johnson went to Washington, D.C., to lobby several lawmakers on marijuana legalization.
Johnson criticizes the government's war on drugs for the millions of dollars being spent and the 1.6 million people being incarcerated each year for drug violations.
Johnson, who declined to run for president this year for the Libertarian Party, said he is considering a run for the presidency in 2008 or 2012 as a Republican. He said he would run on the drug issue in the same vein that Eugene McCarthy ran on the Vietnam issue against Lyndon B. Johnson.
