Candidates Gene DeRossett and John Schwarz narrowly lead a six-candidate field in the 7th Congressional District Republican primary race, with DeRossett's campaign crediting an anti-abortion message for big rise in the polls.
DeRossett, a Manchester state representative, trails Schwarz, a former state senator from Battle Creek, by two percentage points, according to an EPIC/MRA poll released Tuesday.
The results indicate a five-point jump for DeRossett since a similar EPIC/MRA poll last month. But 27 percent of participants were undecided, and there was a 5.7 percent margin of error.
"This is a major shift in the numbers that shows Gene DeRossett is the top pro-life candidate in the race," said DeRossett spokesman Steve Mitchell, who credited two television ads and a districtwide phone campaign focusing on abortion for the increase.
The poll, taken April 14-18, was conducted among 300 likely voters across the district, which covers western Washtenaw County and Calhoun, Eaton, Jackson, Branch, Hillsdale and Lenawee counties. |
