DescriptionAt age 6, mind you, William Winter cast his first ballot — for Democrat Al Smith in the 1928 presidential election.

That's when his Confederate veteran grandfather — noted for having ridden with the intrepid Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest (hence William's middle name of Forrest) took him to the local polling place in rural Grenada County.

He could mark his ballot for him, William's granddaddy told his grandson, as long as he put his "X" next to the Democrat, New York Gov. Al Smith.
Thereby William Winter began what would be a lifetime fascination with — and sometimes candidate — in the art of politics.
