DescriptionKucinich reaffirms candidacy
The UC Boulder Advocate

Democratic presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich criticized the war in Iraq and made it clear he will continue his candidacy during an on-campus speech last Saturday. The Ohio congressman spoke to about 150 people at the Tivoli Turnhalle during his third day of campaigning in Colorado for the April 12 caucuses. Though Kucinich hinted he would support Democratic candidate John Kerry, he said the reason he is still in the race and focusing on the 16 remaining caucuses and primaries is to give Democrats everywhere an opportunity to dictate the direction their party should take.

"There's a lot riding on this (election)," Kucinich said. "Which is why this candidacy is aimed at trying to get the Democrats at a higher level of accountability, so that we're not stuck with these limited choices." Regarding education, Kucinich said the government should be able to afford to let everyone go to college for free, but spending priorities are focused on the wrong areas, like tax cuts for the wealthy and money for the war. On the issue of health care, Kucinich said he advocates a "universal" insurance plan, but right now, coverage doesn't extend to everyone because health care is a profit-driven system. "You're already paying for (health care), you're just not getting it," he said. To demonstrate how he can promote universal health care and other candidates cannot, Kucinich extended his arms at 90-degree angles from his legs, then slowly spun in a circle telling the audience he has no strings attached.
