Description | SC senate approves bill limiting governors to single, 6-year term
WISTV Columbia, South Carolina
A Senate subcommittee Wednesday morning approved a measure that would restrict a governor to a single six-year term. Myrtle Beach Senator Dick Elliott chairs the panel that reviewed the constitutional amendment. He says it's time to debate the idea. Elliott says many people think governors elected to a four-year term immediately begin campaigning for re-election. He says a single term would allow a governor to work on his agenda, without worrying about re-election. The subcommittee also approved four-year terms for House members and six-year terms for Senators. That adds two years for each. The changes would take effect in 2008, if voters approved the changes in November. South Carolina amended the Constitution in 1980 to allow a governor to seek a second four-year term. |
