DescriptionModerate GOP pour soft money into final two weeks of Specter US Senate campaign
The Patriot News

A moderate Republican group that supports Sen. Arlen Specter in Pennsylvania's tightening GOP Senate primary said Tuesday it will chip in nearly $200,000 in soft money for the final two weeks of the race. The Main Street Individual Fund said its opponent is not only conservative challenger Rep. Pat Toomey, but also the group Club For Growth that is helping him. "Pat Toomey is almost a puppet for them," said fund spokeswoman Sarah Chamberlain Resnick.

Starting Wednesday, the soft-money fund is spending nearly $200,000 for a TV ad in mostly rural counties and the Philadelphia area, and for 175,000 get-out-the-vote telephone calls leading up to the April 27 primary. It also boasts convincing 19,000 "Rendellicans" — Republicans who changed their voter registration to Democratic in 2002 to support Gov. Ed Rendell's election — to switch back to the GOP. Two other moderate Republican groups with which Resnick is associated — the Main Street Republican Partnership and its political action committee — already have given a combined $700,000 in radio ads and bundled contributions to help Specter, a political moderate.
