Description | NRA convention set for Pittsburgh
Scripps Howard
The chief executive officer of the National Rifle Association said the organization has never been as unified as it is now, preparing to stage its annual meetings and exhibits next week in Pittsburgh. Wayne LaPierre said the convention, titled "Freedom's Steel" and running April 16-20, is expected to draw 60,000 attendees, the largest crowd ever in the 133 years of the national gathering. He said it promises to be a harmonious affair with no controversial issues or policies emerging. "I foresee a pretty positive convention (as compared) to some in the past," LaPierre said. "I think it will be a very positive, unified convention. I don't see any divisive issue out there." Among the issues that will be discussed are the Federal Assault Weapons Act of 1994, which is set to expire in September; arming airline pilots; and gun-show sales between private individuals. The event also will include exhibits of firearms, accessories and related items; seminars; workshops; and special sessions, such as "God, Guns and Rock 'n' Roll" with rocker and NRA board member Ted Nugent. The NRA board of directors meeting will be April 19-20. |
