DescriptionBush, Blair to Meet to Discuss Iraq Next Week
ABC News

With violence on the rise in Iraq, Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair will meet with President Bush next week to discuss the situation there, government officials familiar with the matter said Tuesday. The two leaders are expected to meet at the White House on April 16. Britain has been the foremost supporter of the U.S.-led effort to remove Iraqi President Saddam Hussein but Blair has received strong criticism from Britons for participating in the conflict. Bush vowed Monday to stick to a June 30 deadline for handing over Iraqi sovereignty, even as a Shi'ite uprising against the U.S.-led occupation stirred fears of a civil war. Blair concurred Tuesday, saying: "Every time these people try to stop a proper handover in Iraq it should reinforce our desire to make that happen." The leaders are also expected to discuss an Israeli plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip. The White House sees the withdrawal as a "positive" and potentially "historic" interim step while the U.S.-backed "road map" Middle East peace initiative remains mired in violence.
