DescriptionAssemblyman Rafael Fraguela, who was denied the endorsement of the Hudson County Democratic organization for a second term, is expected to announce today that he will switch parties and seek re-election as a Republican. The Democrats have lost two seats since the last election: Fraguela and Assemblyman Matt Ahearn, who switched to the Green Party in January. The Assembly now has 42 Democrats, 37 Republicans and one Independent.

Fraguela becomes the first Republican legislator from Hudson County since 1987. The former Union City Commissioner was elected to the Assembly in 2001, but Democrats decided to replace him with Union City Mayor Brian Stack. Stack will run on the organization line in the 33rd district, along with Assembly Speaker Albio Sires. (04/07/03)
