DescriptionThe campaigns of President Bush and U.S. Sen. John Kerry stepped up their ground war in Minnesota on Monday with U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman attacking the Democratic presidential candidate for supporting gas tax increases and Democrats accusing the Republican senator of trying to divert attention from Bush's "terrible record."

The exchange was a forerunner of clashes to come in this presidential battleground state. Bush is waging aggressive campaigns in about 18 swing states, and Kerry and the Democrats are making sure no attack goes unanswered.

Bush has enlisted Coleman to criticize Kerry on a variety of issues. During a news conference at a Mahtomedi gas station Monday, the Republican senator ripped Kerry for once supporting a 50-cents-per-gallon gas tax increase and for voting for higher gas taxes at least 11 times.

With fuel prices at an all-time high, he said, "higher gas taxes would kill just about every positive sign we've seen … that the economy is coming back."

Kerry has said he supported a 50-cent gas tax increase in 1993 as part of a deficit reduction plan, but he does not favor increasing gas taxes now.

But given what he called Kerry's "flip-flops" on the Patriot Act, war with Iraq and NAFTA, Coleman asked: "Who do you believe? Do you believe the Kerry a number of years ago or do you believe him today?"
