DescriptionCollege Democrats of America

The College Democrats of America is the official student outreach arm of the Democratic Party. It aims to elect Democrats, train and engage new generations of progressive activists, and shape the Democratic Party with voices from America’s youth.

CDA was founded in 1932 to boost the presidential campaign of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. From the 1940's to the 1960's, it was the largest student political organization in the nation. When CDA opposed the Vietnam War in 1967, however, President Johnson cut off funding. The organization floundered nationally until it was revitalized in the early 1980s, and it entered a new era of growth in 1988 with the help and support of then-Senator Al Gore. With the Clinton/Gore campaign as its catalyst, CDA grew to nearly 500 chapters and more than 50,000 members by the 1992 election.

In the years since 1992, CDA has proven its commitment to the Democratic Party. To support the Democratic legislative agenda, it has organized initiatives that have resulted in tens of thousands of lobbying phone calls and letters. Additionally, CDA is a key entity in electing Democrats, training students to work on and manage campaigns, and promoting campus activism. It sponsors voter registration drives and heightens student political awareness all across the country.
