Dylan, I'm sorry that you are grappling with this hardship and I'll pray for comfort for you.
I'll share that over the summer a friend of mine and someone else a little more distant in my circle died as well - both of suicide, unrelated but within 7 days of each other.
Kind of rough, particularly my friend because it really just seemed so out of character. I've sinced learned he had a hidden addiction he grappled with very privately and was the reason for his suicide. It hit me very hard. Both did. The grief of helplessness, of sadness, of hopelessness. It can be really overwhelming.
Anyway, I found that sometimes the best way to overcome grief is to immerse oneself into being selfless by helping others. I'd encourage you to volunteer or just start helping someone in your circle that needs help. Its gets our focus/thoughts off ourselves and onto the needs of others.
And there is an unexpected benefit - you are helping to make the world a better place.
Create your own hope out of this, create some positive change to counter balance the hurt.
Peace brother.

You're a great member of the OC community and I'm sorry you are going through this. Take time for yourself, Dylan, and know that it's okay to grieve. After all, grief is love with no place to go.
Thanks so much. Your kind words mean a lot.

Brent, so sorry to hear about the loss of both of your friends. I've learned how empty grief is. You want all the answers and you're just left with a void of emptiness. Thinking of you. I appreciate your kind words. I've never lost a friend like this before and just really depressed at the moment. Thanks again and thoughts and love to you.

Three day weekend. Most people have their minds on their kids graduation or summer vacations starting. The ideal slow news weekend 3pm news drop opportunity. Wonder if we'll get any surprises today.
Santos resigning?
Feinstein retiring?

Why is someone resigning?

We wish... sadly I don't think either is just waiting for the right time to do what is in the obvious public interest.

I worked in political journalism for a short period (writer, very junior). The specter of the late afternoon, holiday weekend news drop always loomed heavily, at least for me. Reading about it is far more fun!

Finally caught the German 2022 "All Quiet on the Western Front" this weekend. Simply blown away about how good this movie was. Highly recommend if you haven't seen it. Best version of the great book I've seen. There is an english language track if you aren't into subtitles.

Great film. I had it in my top 5 for 2022. Does a good job of portraying the realities of war and also the seeds of WW2.
That tank scene - wow one of the best movie war scenes. And yeh, origins of WWII - maybe the best I've seen it done as well.
The other takeaway - the counting of war dead. I didn't realize german dog tags were made that way until I saw the movie and looked it up afterwards. Made to be broken in half for easy counting / notification of the war dead.

Read this - particularly the German section about war identity tags. Details why they were changed.
