Just finished this book: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/693208.The_Absolutely_True_Diary_of_a_Part_Time_Indian It is autobiographical of author Sherman Alexie's early life.
Its been added to a lot of high school reading lists recently since on the forefront is the topic of renaming monuments, streets, high school mascots, etc which have derogatory native names. https://www.coloradopolitics.com/legislature/bill-to-ban-use-of-american-indian-mascots-wins-bipartisan-committee-approval/article_230cabe8-9357-11eb-985f-d3239f4e1348.html
In my area, its caused a bit of a controversy because it contains some adult language and topics. Some people don't think its appropriate for their high school aged children. I think its on a lot reading lists because it does a very good job articulating the experience of being a native growing up and living on "the rez." Contrast this with the stereotypes of native Americans that are churned out by Hollywood and consumed by most high schoolers, this book provides an very honest and humorous take on native life. It is also quite touching and uncomfortable to read at times.
Its not a long book, but a very good book that covers brilliantly the coming age story of a young man and how he has overcome many challenges to triumph in life. This is truly worth the read and might even be a bit of therapy for anyone that struggled with "belonging" at any point in their life - it certainly provided some therapy for me.

Reading this now. A good non-fiction if you are interested in understanding more about the oft mentioned in political campaigns - Opioid Crisis. Very well written and researched.

Finished Empire of Pain. Pretty depressing. Along with what's happening in Ukraine its made me contemplate morality, money, greed, and ethics in general.
Just curious, anonymous poll. How have you, your family or friends been impacted by opioid availability?

Route 23 that stretches through Sussex County is referred to Heroin Highway. Not sure what the numbers are but we have a big opioid problem up here.
One of my take aways from the book - prescription drug abuse is hitting some areas hard. In some areas, the number of prescriptions exceeds the population. This is an indication that if there is a doctor willing to write (over-write) prescription it draws people and tends to infest the area.

Salman Rushdie was stabbed multiple times today in New York. No word yet on whether it was related to the Iranian sponsored fatwa.
