Description | The town of Fletcher was founded in 1891 and was named after its founder, Donald Fletcher. It was renamed Aurora on March 4, 1907. In 1929, the Colorado Secretary of State recognized it as a city with 2,000 residents. In 1983, electors approved an increase in the Aurora City Council from nine to 11 members, and added Wards V and VI, effective with the 1987 election.
Today, the Aurora City Council is composed of council members for wards I, II, III, IV, V and VI, four council members at large and the mayor. At one election, council members for wards I, II and III and two at-large seats are elected. At the next election, the mayor, council members for wards IV, V and VI and two at-large seats are elected. The mayor and city council elections are held on the first Tuesday of November, in odd-numbered years. The mayor and city council are elected to four-year, staggered terms. |
