Construction began in 1907 and ended in 1990.
The cathedral suffered damage from the 2011 Virginia earthquake. Repairs are expected to cost millions and take several years to complete.
Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his final Sunday sermon, “Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution" on March 31, 1968. A memorial service for King was held at the cathedral later that week.
