DescriptionTransgender is an umbrella term which encompasses many different gender identities. The transgender community is very diverse. The way that people represent their gender can fall into a myriad of different expressions.

People may choose to identify as transgender or not identify as transgender and still have non-conforming gender identity. People may be transitioning or not transitioning and still fall into the transgender spectrum. Some people may fall in the middle and be more androgynous. People may choose to have Genital Reassignment Surgery (GRS) or they may choose not to have surgery and still consider themselves as transgender. The term transgender does not imply a person's surgical or non surgical status. The term transgender also does not imply a person's sexual orientation, so it is better not to assume a person's sexual orientation based on the fact that they are transgender.

One of the most important points to remember is that people with non-conforming gender identity choose their own self identifying labels (or no labels). This goes without saying, but the basic rule of thumb is to treat everyone as a human being, no matter what their gender or sexual orientation.
