Description | Dauphin County is a county located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and is one
of four counties comprising the greater Harrisburg metropolitan area. As of 2004,
the population is 253,282. The county contains the city of Harrisburg, which has
served as the state capital since 1812. Harrisburg is also the county seat.
Dauphin County was created on March 4, 1785 from part of Lancaster County and
named for the Dauphin, the heir to the throne of France.
