Description | Chester County was one of the three original counties in the
Colony of Pennsylvania (the other two being
Philadelphia and Bucks), established in 1682.
Chester County has a Census 2000 population of 433,501.
This is an increase of 57,105 persons or 15.2% since 1990.
This increase is slightly less than the population change that
occurred from 1980 to 1990, when the population grew by
59,736 persons or 18.9%.
Tredyffrin Township has the largest population in Chester County (29,062).
Chester County is the 7th largest county in Pennsylvania in total population.
County Seat is West Chester, with a population of 17,861 (2000).
Coatesville is the only city in Chester County (listed 2nd in the municipalities after the county seat.)
