| Description | This seat has been represented in Parliament by some illustrious names. Sir Winston Churchill was MP for Woodford between 1945 and 1964. But Chingford was really put on the political map by Norman (Lord) Tebbit, the MP between 1974 and 1992. Since then the MP for the current seat has been another prominent Tory and Euro-sceptic, the former party leader, Iain Duncan Smith. The Chingford and Woodford Green constituency was one of two seats created in 1995. It crosses the borders of the London boroughs of Redbridge and Waltham Forest. Two former Wanstead and Woodford wards - Monkhams and Church End - were added on to the old Chingford seat which lost the ward of Chapel Green. On the north east London fringes of Essex, this is solid, 87% white, car-driving, house-owning, patriotic, Tory suburbia. Unemployment in 2001 stood at 4.5%. Other seats which are home to "Essex man" (such as Basildon) remain Labour and are key indicators of Labour's performance.
