DescriptionBefore 1997, Carshalton was a relatively safe Tory seat. But all that changed when Tom Brake converted an almost 10,000 Conservative majority into a 2,267 Lib Dem one. He doubled this in 2001. This seat now forms part of a corridor of gold - Liberal Democrat representation from Sutton through to Richmond Park and the Thames. This is an overwhelmingly (90%) white constituency, made up of typical outer London suburbs, including the towns of Carshalton and Wallington themselves, as well as some more affluent parts such as Carshalton Beeches and Woodcote. Seventy per cent of homes are owner-occupied. Many residents commute into central London, although there is some business activity - Securicor has its national headquarters in the constituency. There is also a surprisingly high number of council homes, particularly in the Roundshaw estate at Beddington, built on the site of the old Croydon aerodrome which was London's first international airport and is benefiting from a vast regeneration project. Part of the large 1930s St Helier estate is also here: this includes St Helier Hospital where, in March 1943, baby John Major was born. The council has been in Liberal Democrat hands since 1990. Mr Brake, the Lib Dem spokesman on international affairs.
