DescriptionThis seat includes the western end of the city of Newcastle and covers Woolsington (site of the airport), Denton, Lemington and Westerhope, reaching the Tyne at Newburn. It is a mixed seat, combining council estates and suburban home owners. Although shipbuilding has not happened here for over a century, it is important to the economic livelihood of the seat as many companies are based here which are connected with the industry and many constituents are employed either by shipyards in neighbouring seats (like Wallsend) or by sub-contractors within Newcastle North itself. Other employers include British Bakers, Nestle and Sanofi-Winthrop medical laboratory. The international airport is also a major source of jobs. In council terms, Labour is strong in Lemington and Newburn; elsewhere the Liberal Democrats hold sway, having taken 24 seats from Labour city-wide and with it control of the council in 2004. In Fawdon ward they defeated the Leader of the Council, taking all three seats. Labour first won Newcastle North in a tight, three-way contest in 1983. The sitting MP, Doug Henderson, has represented the seat since 1987, currently with a majority of 14,450 or 39.7%.
