DescriptionJarrow constituency includes the town of the same name, plus Hebburn and the villages of Boldon, Cleadon and Whitburn. It is best known for the 1936 'hunger march' when the unemployed of Jarrow (male unemployment than was running at 70% due to the collapse of the Tyne shipbuilding industry) walked to London to present a petition to Parliament. It is less known that Jarrow actually had a Tory MP for four years from 1931 (like Durham and Sedgefield) until 'Red' Ellen Wilkinson regained it for Labour in 1935. The Shell depot in Jarrow was targeted in the September 2000 fuel protests, and, in November of that year, protesters tried to recreate the Jarrow crusade with a convoy of trucks down to London - something that created considerable anger in Jarrow itself. The constituency's economy was traditionally based on coal mining, steel and shipping. During the 1980s the coal and steel works declined and closed down and there is only a little of the shipping left, though Swan Hunter on Tyneside has secured some new contracts. The MP here is Stephen Hepburn who succeeded his mentor and former Deputy Chief Whip, Don Dixon. Labour's majority increased in 2001 from 49.9% to 51%.
