DescriptionThe rugged and rural seat of Hexham is the largest constituency in Northumberland and the second largest in England, behind Penrith and the Border in next door Cumbria. Hexham almost seems custom-built for the Conservatives and has the distinction of being the only parliamentary seat in the county that they have never lost. This record was almost broken in 1997 when their majority was slashed to 222. The towns of Hexham and Corbridge are the main centres, as well as other settlements along the Tyne - Prudhoe and Haltwhistle. There are also approximately 10,000 electors in Ponteland near Newcastle Airport which is well known for its concentration of millionaires, many of which live in tree-lined Darras Hall. The constituency has a high proportion of self-employed (19%) and people who work from home (14.8%). At 29% Hexham has the third highest percentage of 45-64 year olds in the country. Its landscape has been spared industrialisation and remains virtually unchanged from ancient times, featuring well-preserved sections of Hadrian's Wall. Although it seems now like an oasis of isolation and tranquillity, Hexham has a violent and turbulent history with many of its market towns subjected to fire, plague and sackings by the Scots and Danes during the early Middle Ages. Most of the noise and excitement these days comes from the Hexham racecourse and the Kileder Forest stage of the RAC rally. Peter Atkinson has been MP here since 1992. After the near-shock in 1997, he gained a larger 2,529 majority in 2001.
