Description | Durham North West is a sizeable constituency which consists of terraced towns like Consett, Crook and Willington. It also covers smaller settlements like Lanchester and Tow Law - the site of a foot-and-mouth dumping ground in 2001 - as well as some rural areas in the Wear Valley. Consett was in a seat of its own until 1983, not long after the closure of its steelworks which devastated the town. Though unemployment still remains high, it has managed a degree of recovery since and is looking towards tourism as a new source of revenue. Labour Chief Whip Hilary Armstrong has been MP here since 1987. She was born locally and was a social worker in the area before her election. Her majority in the landslide year of 1997 was almost 25,000 - 53.4% and stayed high in 2001. The seat has stayed in the Armstrong family: her father, Ernest, was the previous MP from 1964-87.
