DescriptionLabour has held Durham North ever since its creation in 1983. It is an amalgam of the old seats of Consett and Chester-le-Street - the latter having been held by the party since 1906. Even in 1931 it had a majority of 8,000 when Labour could only win 50 seats nationwide. Not even the loss of 6,000 voters to neighbouring Durham North West in the 1995 boundary review could prevent Labour having a majority of over 26,000 in 1997. The economically ailing Consett is now part of Durham North West, while the more prosperous Chester-le-Street has become the major population centre of this relatively small seat. Formerly a mining area, this market town has become a new venue for international cricket. The constituency is also growing as a commuter belt for Gateshead, Newcastle and Sunderland. For many years Durham North was represented by Labour right-winger, Giles Radice who first won at a 1973 by-election. He retired in 2001 having amassed a majority of 26,000 or 56% in 1997. His successor, Kevan Jones, a former GMB official and Newcastle councillor, still managed an 18,683 majority in 2001.
