DescriptionThis seat has been made famous by the traditional song "Blaydon Races" and lies at the western end of the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead. It contains the small towns of Blaydon, Ryton and Whickham, along with part of the Dunstan area in inner Gateshead. It also includes the old mining village of Chopwell, which was once considered one of the most communist areas of the country, particular in the run-up to the industrial crises of the 1920s. This was once a mining area, a factor which accounts for the strong Labour traditions here, but with the mining industry gone, engineering is now the main source of employment. Local businesses include the Associated Co-operative Creamery (the Co-op has a long link to the area, its first shop in the area having opened in 1858). Zytronic, a technology firm, is one of Blaydon's expanding enterprises. John McWilliam has held this seat for Labour since 1979. The only drama came in 1997 when the Lib Dems overtook the Conservatives to second place.
