DescriptionNewport East is home to the giant Llanwern steelworks, and long-anticipated bad news arrived in 2001 when its owner, Corus, announced the end of steel-making and serious job losses. There has been fresh uncertainty for the Llanwern workforce of more than 1,000, with the company facing major financial problems. In 2005, Corus sold 600 acres of land to a property developer with the possibility of creating 7000 new jobs over ten years. £200m will be invested in the scheme, billed as the largest regeneration of its kind since that at Cardiff Bay. The city council says Newport has attracted more than £3bn worth of inward investment, creating more than 10,000 jobs since the mid-1980s. But continuing speculation over the future of the plant casts a cloud over Newport's economic regeneration. It has, however, attracted new industry in both the electronic and financial services sectors. The city is also home to Wales's first urban regeneration company, Newport Unlimited, with the aim of replacing the jobs lost in recent years in steel and other areas. This is a is seen as a solid Labour seat at both the assembly and Westminster. There was controversy at the 1997 general election when former Conservative minister Alan Howarth became the Labour candidate, and he faced a challenge from miners' leader Arthur Scargill. But Mr Howarth fought that off and he has maintained a comfortable majority - although he is he is not standing at this election. The Labour candidate is the party's general secretary in Wales, Jessica Morden.
