DescriptionThe Alabama Public Service Commission is charged with regulating public utilities and
some aspects of the transportation industry doing business in Alabama.

The agency's mission is two-fold: First, it ensures these companies offer their services
to the public at a fair price. Second, the PSC must also allow regulated utility companies
to operate at a level that will enable them to provide adequate service to customers like
you. Maintaining this 'balancing act' means that Alabama consumers continue to enjoy
top-quality service at reasonable rates.

Privately owned companies providing electric, gas, water, & telecommunications services,
including both long distance and local telephone service providers, plus railroads, buses
and some trucking and taxi companies are regulated by the PSC. However, the PSC does
not regulate electric coops, most water companies, municipal utilities, cable television
systems, cellular phones or the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Three elected public officials administer the functions of the PSC, a president and two
associate commissioners. The Commissioners are elected statewide to four-year terms,
with the President's term staggered by two years from the other commissioners.
