State of Illinois
What is now the state of Illinois was once a part of the vast Northwest Territory. Its name
is a French corruption of the native word Iliniwek meaning "Tribe of Superior Men," which
described a consortium of Algonquin tribes. Captured from the British during the American
War of Independence, Illinois was included within the new Indiana Territory in 1800. Nine
years later, it became the Illinois Territory, ultimately achieving statehood on December 3,
1818 - the 21st State of the Union.

Polls are open from 6:00am to 7:00pm Central Time

Illinois Primaries will be held on the third Tuesday in March per a new law signed by
Governor Pat Quinn in 2009.
Registration is Nonpartisan.
