| Description | President elected to a 5-year term for a maximum of two terms until 2017. President Evo Morales' desire to hold onto power past required term limits forced a national referendum in 2016 which wound up upholding them. In late 2017, a regime-allied Constitutional Tribunal reversed the referendum result. All term limits on elected officials, including the president, were subsequently removed.
National disquiet over rigged election primary results on October 20, 2019 increased festering fears that the President had grown repressive and antidemocratic. This led to the overthrow of Evo Morales on November 10, 2019.
Term limits were restored by unanimous consent of Parliament on November 23, 2019 and congressional and presidential results were invalidated. |
