The original People's Assembly was disbanded and replaced by the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) in 1988. A democratically-elected parliament was established in the form of the two-chamber Assembly of the Union (ပြည်ထောင်စု လွှတ်တော်; Pyidaungsu Hluttaw) in 2011.
