60-seat legislative body of the unicameral parliament of San Marino. Began in the 13th Century as the "Council of the LX." Members serve a five-year term.
The Council is the most powerful body in San Marino as it appoints from among its members the entirety of the Congress of State, which is the government's executive arm. It also elects from its ranks the nation's judicial arm, the the Council of Twelve, and the two Captains Regents every six months. The power of Captains Regents is strictly symbolic.
