| Description |
Whitehorse Centre lies at the heart of the city, taking in not only the downtown district but also some of the Marwell Industrial Area. As the city's oldest area, it is undergoing change and revitalization as Big Box stores draw away shoppers and Main Street businesses try to recast the district as a trendy alternative. The development of the Yukon River waterfront, which ties the downtown to the new shopping area, is moving ahead. It has been spurred on by the recent settlement of the Kwanlin Dun land claim.
Work is also being done to try to curb the downtown's recurrent problems with people who have alcohol and drug addictions. However, as high-end condos replace low-income housing, a shift is underway to lure more young professionals and affluent retirees into the area.
