Description |
Tucked into the southeast corner of the territory, the riding of Watson Lake is bounded by the Northwest Territories to the east, British Columbia to the south, Finlayson Lake to the north and Swift River to the west. The town of Watson Lake, home to about 1,500 people, is the main centre of the constituency, which also includes the Kaska community of Upper Liard and the Alaska Highway settlements of Swift River and Rancheria.
It is one of the most economically depressed areas in the territory, with no major industries such as sawmills currently in operation. The reopening of the CanTung tungsten mine just across the border in the N.W.T. came as welcome news. As the "Gateway to the Yukon," tourism also plays a major role in the area's economy.
Most of the riding lies within the traditional territory of the Kaska, one of the few First Nations in the Yukon without a final land-claim settlement. This is considered to be the major impediment to economic growth.
