Description |
Vuntut Gwich'in has the fewest voters of any riding in the Yukon – 164 in the 2002 election. When the boundaries commission did its work in 2002, it recognized the unique situation of the riding, which extends north to the waters of the Beaufort Sea, west to Alaska and east to the Northwest Territories. All the voters live in or near the only community, Old Crow (pop. 267), which has no road access and is composed almost exclusively of members of the Vuntut Gwich'in First Nation.
The Vuntut Gwich'in First Nation settled its land claim more than 10 years ago and provides the local government for the region.
Two national parks – Ivvavik and Vuntut – are in the riding and the Porcupine caribou herd travels through the region on its annual migration.
